This work reinterprets the jangseung, traditional Korean guardian poles that stood at village entrances and roadways, as modern symbols. Jangseung have stood at the boundary between humans and the unseen world, protecting communities from external harm. I sought to expand this role beyond that of a simple 'guardian', envisioning it as a psychological and spiritual presence that fully witnesses the anxieties, fears, and confusion humans encounter in life.

The face of the jangseung in the painting moves beyond the simple expression of traditional jangseung, embodying both vitality and playfulness through vibrant patterns and colors. The mouth, resembling a smile, is both the face of a friendly protector and a smile of wisdom that seems to pierce through the world's suffering and human anguish. The circular pattern unfolding behind the head signifies the harmony of heaven, earth, and humanity, as well as the boundary space where the Jangseung stands. The rhythmic patterns flowing within visually express invisible energy-the very flow of life.

This work expresses that the act of "protecting someone" is not merely a passive role of warding off external threats, but an active heart that embraces life's moments-breathing together, laughing together, swaying together. For the guardian post is not a god looking down from afar with transcendent power, but a close protector who stands beside us, guarding even our swaying emotions and frailties.

이 작품은 우리 전통 마을의 수호신이자 경계의 지킴이였던 장승을 현대적 감각으로 재해석한 것이다. 장승은 길과 마을의 어귀에서 인간과 보이지 않는 세계의 경계에 서서 외부의 해로움으로부터 공동체를 보호해 왔다. 나는 이 역할을 단순한 '수호자'의 기능으로 보지 않고, 인간이 삶 속에서 마주하는 불안· 두려움·혼란을 온전히 지켜보는 심리적·영적 ·존재로 확장해 보고자 했다.

그림 속 장승의 얼굴은 전통 장승의 단순한 표정에서 벗어나, 다채로운 패턴과 색을 통해 생명력과 유희성을 동시에 담았다. 미소처럼 보이는 입매는 친근한 보호자의 얼굴이면서도, 세상의 고통과 인간의 고뇌를 꿰뚫어 보는 듯한 지혜의 미소이기도 하다. 머리 뒤로 펼쳐진 원형의 문양은 하늘·땅·인간의 조화, 그리고 장승이 서 있는 경계의 공간을 의미한다. 그 안에 흐르는 리듬 같은 패턴들은 보이지 않는 에너지, 곧 생명의 흐름을 시각적으로 표현한 것이다.

이 작품은 "누군가를 지킨다"는 행위가 단지 외부의 위협을 막는 수동적 역할이 아니라, 함께 숨 쉬고, 함께 웃고, 함께 흔들리는 삶의 순간을 껴안아 주는 적극적 마음임을 표현한다. 장승은 멀리서 초월적인 힘으로 내려다보는 신이 아니라, 우리 곁에서 흔들리는 감정과 나약함까지 함께 지켜주는 가까운 수호자이니까.
