DO MI JA

“Like a Flowing River”

Hometown, Family, Nature

I wanted to live like a flowing river.

Not against the current, but just like that, naturally.

I mainly use Hanji (Korean paper) for my work.

To express the shades of ink in various forms, I devised several methods, allowing the steps of concentration to be distinguished.

When ink sits on Hanji, thin paper tears or develops holes.

If I use paper made by layering Hanji multiple times (multilayered paper), then this time the ink bleeding doesn't soak or spread as desired.

To understand the ink's absorbency, I have to experiment several times, adjusting the paper's thickness.

Still, I love Hanji where the inner bark of the paper mulberry (Dak) is visible.

The bamboo used as an object is from the bamboo grove at the site of my Jirisan house.

I cut it to varying heights and then boil it in salt water to prevent mold.

It's even better if I use ash from burned bamboo. Bamboo should be cut in autumn,

and when slicing it thinly, it often splits or breaks in the middle, making it hard to get a complete piece.

I mainly draw the Chinese characters of the theme in seal script (篆書體), like a picture, as a background,

and then place the bamboo on top in a method like this.

I will continue this bamboo work for a while.
